Thank you for joining us in Washington D.C. for our annual Adaptive Leadership Conference!

A resounding thank you to our 260 attendees representing 18 countries, 30 volunteers, and 60 speakers and presenters for making our third annual conference a success!

Conference Overview

The ground beneath us is shifting. Adaptive leadership practitioners, researchers, and trainers are immersed in the turbulence of global, regional, national and organizational changes. In these times, many face a dilemma: to hold or disrupt? Core belief structures are being challenged, our communities are fragmented and we sense democratic institutions are at risk.  How do we listen to the song beneath the words, and engage, in a polarized environment of competing narratives and build bridges across divergent perspectives? Re-examining our communities, our institutions and ourselves is critical, but we cannot afford to remain on the balcony indefinitely.  This conference is a time for us to gather as a community, to step back, to learn from our own and other’s experiences and to frame our plans to engage.

To Hold or To Disrupt: Leading in Unsettling Times

In an era of turbulence at regional, national and global levels, many of us are faced with a dilemma: do we hold steady, working to shore up the bulwark of our social institutions? Or should we disrupt the status quo in an effort to make space for new thinking and fresh ideas?

The Adaptive Leadership Network is hosting its third annual conference, diving deep into these adaptive challenge. The goal of the conference is to help us wrestle with this dilemma of whether to hold or disrupt without letting it paralyze us. The conference planning team is developing a powerful program with a variety of practical skill-building workshops, peer panels, case consultations, and reflective sessions designed to take your practice to the next level.

This year’s presenters include leadership professors Ronald Heifetz, Dean Williams, Hugh O'Doherty, Farayi Chipungu and Tim O'Brien as well as Governor Jennifer Granholm and leadership educator Dan Mulhern.

This year's conference builds from the successes of previous years. Themes include:

  • Reorient: Gain perspective through our individual and collective stories
  • Retool: Build our capacity to do the work
  • Reflect: Examine our past, re-establish our sanctuaries, and consider our future
  • Challenge: Gain insights from the questioning of others
  • Purpose: Reconnect with our commitment to adaptive leadership
  • Mobilize: Consider what we will do by ourselves and with each other
